Academic Areas

Choosing an Academic Area to Submit to

Abstracts will be evaluated in the academic area you select from the 10 academic areas for graduate students or 3 academic areas for postdoctoral scholars. In determining the area in which you will submit your abstract, the primary factor to consider is the subject matter addressed by your research, not necessarily your area of enrollment. Some examples of this include...

  • A paper from a graduate student in Comparative Studies might be evaluated within Arts, Social and Behavioral Science, or Mathematical and Physical Sciences rather than in Humanities.
  • A paper on pedagogy in engineering courses might be evaluated in Education & Human Ecology or in Engineering.
  • A paper on linguistic codeswitching between Greek and Albanian in memes might be evaluated in Arts, Social and Behavioral Science, or the Humanities.

While choosing an area can be a large choice, the Hayes Organizing Committee will not be able to make that choice for students or postdocs. The Hayes Organizing Committee strongly recommends students see below

'Historic' Academic Area Application Patterns - Graduate Student Sessions

Please note, listed below are categories where we normally see people apply.  However, graduate student researchers may choose to apply to a different category based on their topic.  This is an interdisciplinary research forum, therefore judges will review abstracts and presentations broadly and may not be content experts in your specific area (i.e., a linguistics abstract applying to Social & Behavioral Sciences may be reviewed by a Psychologist, Geographer, and Sociologist).
